India’s defence research agency has transferred an artificial intelligence (AI)-based situational awareness system, ‘Prajna’, to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The step marks a boost in the country’s push to integrate advanced technologies into internal security operations.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the system is designed to enhance real-time monitoring, threat detection and decision-making capabilities for security agencies.

What is the ‘Prajna’ System and How It Works?

‘Prajna’ is an AI-driven platform that processes large volumes of data from multiple sources to generate actionable insights. It enables automated analysis of video feeds, sensor inputs and other intelligence data to identify unusual patterns & potential threats.

“The system supports faster response by reducing reliance on manual monitoring. It can flag anomalies, track movements and provide timely alerts.”

-said officials

The platform is created to support central and state agencies in surveillance, crowd management and border security operations.

The system has been developed with scalability in mind, enabling deployment across security environments with minimum adjustments.

Why It Matters for India’s Security and AI Adoption?

The handover signals a broader policy push to integrate AI into governance and national security frameworks. With increasing dependence on data-led policing and surveillance, tools like ‘Prajna’ will improve coordination between agencies and strengthen preventive capabilities.

Officials indicated that the system will help address gaps in monitoring large and complex environments, particularly in urban centres and sensitive zones. It also aligns with ongoing efforts to build indigenous technology solutions under India’s digital and defence innovation programmes.

The deployment is likely to support smarter resource allocation, quicker incident response and improved situational awareness across multiple layers of security operations.
