OpenAI has quietly acquired Weights. gg, a small startup known for its AI-powered voice cloning tools, according to sources familiar with the matter. The deal reportedly includes the company’s team and its intellectual property. Weights .gg operated as a social platform where users could create, share, and experiment with AI models. Its free consumer app, Replay, allowed users to generate realistic AI voice clones in just a few steps.

The platform also became popular for cloning copyrighted and celebrity voices, including those of President Donald Trump and Joe Biden. The growing use of AI-generated voices has sparked wider debates around copyright, consent, and misuse of synthetic media.

Despite the acquisition, OpenAI does not appear ready to roll out its voice cloning technology to the public. In a 2024 blog post, the company said access to such tools would remain limited to a select group of trusted partners for now.
