The Indian telecom subscriber base has risen to 133.7 crore in April 2026. The data and growth are driven by the continued growth in wireless users and improved rural connectivity. The fresh data has been released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The sector reportedly saw gains in both the mobile and broadband segments as telecom operators continued to expand 5G services and digital infrastructure nationwide.

The monthly report showed that wireless subscriptions increased during April, while private telecom operators continued to dominate market share. Bharti Airtel emerged as the top gainer in subscriber additions during the month, ahead of rivals Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea.

Airtel Bags the Highest Number of Subscribers

TRAI data signals that Airtel added the most mobile subscribers in April. The telecom giant is strengthening its position in India’s competitive telecom market.

Reliance Jio remained the country’s largest telecom operator by total wireless subscriber base, while Vodafone Idea continued to report subscriber losses during the month.

The report also highlighted a steady growth in rural telecom connectivity. Rural wireless subscriptions increased, reflecting ongoing network expansion and rising smartphone adoption outside major urban centres. Tele-density in rural regions also improved marginally during the reporting period.

India’s broadband subscriber base continued to expand as telecom companies pushed fixed wireless access (FWA), fibre broadband and 5G-backed internet services. The rise in data consumption has remained a key driver for telecom operators as digital payments, streaming, AI-led services and enterprise cloud adoption continue to grow.

5G Expansion: Driving the Telecom Competition

The latest subscribers come amid active 5G rollout plans by pan-India telecom operators. Airtel and Reliance Jio have continued to expand their standalone and non-standalone 5G networks to improve coverage and monetise premium data services.

Industry analysts say telecom operators are increasingly focusing on retaining high-value users through bundled digital services, enterprise connectivity and home broadband offerings. Subscriber growth in rural India is also expected to remain a major focus area as operators look to increase average revenue per user (ARPU).

Investors and industry stakeholders closely track TRAI’s monthly telecom performance indicators as India’s telecom sector moves deeper into the next phase of 5G adoption, AI infrastructure demand and digital public service expansion.
