Treading the path of Make in India, software firm Zoho Corporation has launched Nathu La. It is an in-house server platform designed to reduce artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure costs and give the company greater control over its technology stack.
The move comes at a time when global business giants are struggling with rising computing costs driven by growing AI adoption. By designing its own server platform, Zoho aims to improve efficiency, lower operating expenses and reduce dependence on foreign technology suppliers.

A Push Towards Full-Stack Technology Ownership
Nathu La marks a significant milestone in Zoho’s long-term strategy of building and managing every layer of its technology infrastructure, from hardware and data centres to software applications and AI services.
According to the company, the server platform delivers comparable performance while reducing power consumption by 12-18 percent and lowering total ownership costs by 20-30 percent. These gains are expected to help bring down the cost of running AI workloads across Zoho’s global operations.
Built using Intel Xeon 6 processors and developed in collaboration with Intel, the platform has been under development for nearly five years.

Developed in India for India’s Growing Digital Infrastructure
The launch marks Zoho’s stepping beyond its traditional software business and into hardware.
“The project is driven largely by engineering teams based in Nagpur, reflecting our focus on nurturing domestic hardware talent & reducing reliance on imported technology.”
-said officials at Zoho
The company owns the intellectual property behind the platform and has filed related patents for server architecture and thermal management. Several components have been designed internally and assembled through Indian manufacturing partners.
The move also aligns with the government’s policy and initiatives to increase local value creation in the technology sector.

Nathu La: Eyeing AI Competence and Data Control
The launch highlights a growing trend among technology companies seeking tighter control over infrastructure as AI-related costs continue to rise.
Zoho plans to deploy Nathu La across its own data centres and applications rather than commercialise the platform immediately. The company believes that closer integration between hardware and software can improve performance, strengthen data governance and make AI services more cost-effective over time.
As enterprises prioritise data sovereignty and infrastructure resilience, Zoho has signalled a quick shift towards homegrown technology development in India’s digital economy.
Nathu La may not enter the commercial server market immediately. But the launch underscores a larger trend: Indian technology firms are beginning to invest beyond software into core infrastructure as AI reshapes the economics of computing.
