New York City has imposed a one-year ban on AI usage for students in public elementary and middle schools, creating one of the strictest AI restrictions in a US school district.

The policy will cover about 600,000 students through eighth grade during the upcoming school year, while some AI use will remain permitted for high school students and teachers.

New York City Puts AI Use on Hold for Younger Students

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the measure on Wednesday, saying schools would halt the current use of about 40 educational AI tools in classrooms.

The decision affects students through eighth grade in the city’s public school system. High school students will still be allowed to use AI in some circumstances.

“Students need teachers and human interaction to learn and develop.”

-said Mamdani.

He further emphasised the importance of students building relationships with educators, working alongside classmates, and tackling difficult problems themselves.

The move makes New York City’s policy the most restrictive among US school districts so far, according to the report. Other districts, including Los Angeles, are reviewing their own AI policies.

Teachers Can Still Use AI for School Work

The restrictions do not amount to a complete ban on AI across New York City’s public schools.

Teachers will be allowed to use AI for tasks including lesson planning and scheduling. The distinction allows schools to use the technology for administrative and instructional support while limiting student access at younger grade levels.

The New York City public school system has previously taken a different approach to ChatGPT. It introduced a temporary ban shortly after the chatbot was launched in 2022. That restriction was later lifted and replaced with a custom AI-powered teaching assistant, according to Microsoft.

Google, Anthropic and Microsoft did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

What the NYC AI Ban Means?

The one-year moratorium puts New York City’s largest public school system at the centre of the growing debate over how AI should be used in classrooms.

For now, the policy draws a clear line: AI access for students is restricted through eighth grade, while teachers retain limited use of the technology and older students can use it in some cases.

New York’s decision will be closely watched as other major US school districts assess how far AI should be allowed into classrooms.
