China is planning to invest around 2 trillion yuan (about $295 billion) over the next five years to build data centres across the country. The move is aimed at strengthening its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and competing with the United States in the global AI race.
National Computing Network Under Development
According to a report by Bloomberg News, China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) is working with other government agencies on a plan to create a nationwide network of connected computing hubs. These facilities will support AI development and advanced computing needs.

AI and Emerging Technologies a Key Focus
China’s latest five-year policy plan highlights its goal to expand AI adoption across industries. The country also wants to become a global leader in technologies such as quantum computing and humanoid robots. Major state-owned companies, including China Mobile and China Telecom, are expected to operate most of the new data centres. They will also help ensure the facilities remain connected through a national network.
Huawei to Play Major Role
The report said China wants at least 80% of the technology used in these projects, including AI chips, to come from local suppliers. Huawei Technologies is expected to be a key partner. This could reduce reliance on foreign chipmakers such as Nvidia and AMD.
