In a recent structural announcement, OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, vows to keep its mission alive, walking simultaneously on the route of human benefit through a not-for-profit organization and maneuvering capital resources through a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC). As per the announcement, the nonprofit will control and also be a large shareholder of the PBC, giving the nonprofit better resources to support many benefits.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, in his letter to the employees, says, ” We are committed to this path of democratic AI. We want to put incredible tools in the hands of everyone.” In the announcement, the CEO talks at length about the company’s plans to make its solutions available to humanity at large without any difficulty and with certain obvious restrictions.
The Emergence of AGI
The CEO adds, ” We want to be able to operate and get resources in such a way that we can make our services broadly available to all of humanity, which currently requires hundreds of billions of dollars and may eventually require trillions of dollars." The CEO highlights the company’s vision to make Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) available to the public at large, specifically beneficial AGI, which would necessitate huge volumes of money in development, training, and alignment.

Making Structures Simpler!
Highlighting the need surrounding the change of structure coupled with the emergence of AGI, the CEO says, “ Instead of our current complex capped-profit structure—which made sense when it looked like there might be one dominant AGI effort but doesn’t in a world of many great AGI companies—we are moving to a normal capital structure where everyone has stock.” Further, the company adds that this makes more sense than any other option.
The company has opted for this option, looking at the competition, it is set to face companies like Anthropic, backed by Amazon, XAI, backed by Elon Musk, and other such companies. In such a scenario, the company needs to prepare itself accordingly, not only to offer services but also to arrange resources to pursue its mission, keeping in mind the competitive aspects.

Mutual Benefit
Reflecting on the aspect of mutual benefit, the CEO adds, “ And as the PBC grows, the nonprofit’s resources will grow, so it can do even more.” The company hopes to fund its not-for-profit initiatives through the funds it is set to receive from the public benefit structure to keep its mission alive, wherever it reaches in the future, through whatever business means it opts for.
The company has once again reiterated its stand of continuing its mission to benefit humankind through its research and solutions. The company is possibly trying to reply to people who were opposed to the idea of the company going for-profit, like Elon Musk and others. In the last, the CEO adds that this enables them to make rapid, safe progress and to put great AI in the hands of everyone.
