Ever caught yourself humming a tune and thought, “Wait, what song is that?” Well, Google wants Gemini to answer that for you now. Just days after debuting its much-anticipated SEARCH LIVE feature, the tech giant is back with another update to its AI assistant. This time, it's reviving a long-lost fan favourite from the Google Assistant era: SONG IDENTIFICATION.
With this fresh update, Google Gemini can now help you figure out what music is playing around you—whether it's a track on the radio, a tune from your playlist, or even a melody you manage to hum. Simply ask, “What song is this?” and Gemini will kick off the familiar SONG SEARCH tool that long-time Assistant users know and love.

Not Fully Native—Yet
However, the experience isn’t fully streamlined. Rather than staying within Gemini’s conversational interface, this song detection feature redirects users to a full-screen listening window powered by the Google app. It’s a bit of a jarring shift, especially when compared to the smoother experience offered by the Pixel’s Now Playing feature or Google Assistant’s inline recognition. The result? Once the song is identified, it’s displayed in Google Search, not within Gemini itself. This shift in app breaks the flow of a continuous AI chat experience.

Android Only
Currently, this feature is exclusive to Android users. iPhone users looking to try out Gemini's new musical ear will have to wait, as there’s no sign of iOS support just yet. Additionally, if you want to identify multiple songs one after the other, you'll need to manually relaunch the Song Search interface each time—there’s no automatic loop-back.
