Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta (formerly Facebook), has announced a major overhaul in the internal structure of the company, aiming to add some feathers of AI to its cap. It is being done with a commitment to make systems that can perform better than humans or equal to humans, termed by the company as “superintelligence.”

Post the reshuffle, Meta’s AI team will fall under Meta Superintelligence Labs, a new group announced by Zuckerberg on Monday. The team will be led by Alexander Wang, the former CEO of data-labeling startup Scale AI, as per an internal memo seen by Bloomberg. Assisting him will be Nat Friedman, the former CEO of GitHub, who will also be heading Meta’s work on AI products and applied research.

The Superintelligence Era is Over the Horizon.

“As the pace of AI progress accelerates, developing superintelligence is coming into sight,” the Bloomberg report cites Zuckerberg writing in the internal post. “I believe this will be the beginning of a new era for humanity, and I am fully committed to doing what it takes for Meta to lead the way," he affirms.

Gradually, A has taken center stage among the tech giants worldwide. Companies like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI are continuously exploring the AI revolution with capital, innovation, and partnerships. Moreover, traditional investors like SoftBank have also entered the race. In such a scenario, Zuckerberg and Meta find themselves surrounded by giant tech companies with heavy and huge investments, talent, and, above all, opportunities.

Gearing Up to AI Expectations

Earlier this month, Meta invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI, bringing Alexander Wang on board in the process. The company has also held acquisition talks with Perplexity AI and Runway AI and is expected to acquire PlayAI, a small startup that uses AI to replicate voices.

It also features several OpenAI researchers—Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi, Shengjia Zhao, and Hongyu Ren—as well as Joel Pobar from Anthropic, who spent over a decade at Meta.
