OpenAI is reportedly planning to launch its first consumer hardware device in late 2026 or early 2027. The company has developed several prototypes, including a screen-free smart speaker, smart glasses, a digital voice recorder, and a wearable pin.

Design & Manufacturing Partners

OpenAI has secured partnerships with major Apple component suppliers, Luxshare and Goertek, to build parts for these potential devices. The firm also acquired io Products, the AI hardware startup led by former Apple designer Jony Ive, earlier in 2025, to lead design efforts.

Device Form Factors & Features

One of the planned prototypes is described as a smart speaker without a display. Other prototypes include smart glasses, a voice recorder, and a wearable “pin” device. Some of the devices are expected to be contextually aware and designed to augment daily life rather than replace smartphones or laptops.

Talent, Timing, and Speculation

The project is reportedly led by Tang Tan, a former senior Apple designer now serving as hardware chief at OpenAI. OpenAI has also hired many former Apple engineers and design personnel in 2025 to work on device design, user interface, audio, manufacturing, and related components. The target launch timeframe is late 2026 to early 2027.

Challenges & Market Position

While OpenAI’s ambition is bold, similar devices in the past—such as the Rabbit R1 or Humane AI Pin—have not achieved widespread success. OpenAI aims to leverage its strong brand recognition and design partner network to avoid previous missteps. As of now, no final designs, pricing, or confirmed release dates have been disclosed.
