OpenAI has revealed plans to launch its first official corporate office in India’s capital, New Delhi, in the upcoming months. This move comes shortly after rolling out a ChatGPT pricing plan crafted especially for Indian users. The company confirmed that it has begun building a local team in India to support its regional strategy.

Building on Strategic Hires
OpenAI’s expansion follows earlier strategic appointments in India—Pragya Mishra (formerly of Truecaller and Meta) was brought on as the lead for public policy and partnerships in April 2024, while Rishi Jaitly, ex-Twitter India head, joined as a senior advisor to facilitate dialogue with Indian policymakers.
India: A Natural Fit
As the second-largest internet and smartphone market globally, India represents a compelling growth opportunity for OpenAI, which is also facing competition from giants like Google and tech startups like Perplexity. A key aim of the Delhi office is to deepen ties with local partners—ranging from governments and businesses to developers and universities—and to gather feedback that will guide the creation of India-relevant AI tools and features.
