Zoho Corporation has made a significant leap in decentralising technology development by launching a state-of-the-art research and development (R&D) facility in Neduvathoor, a small village in the Kollam district of Kerala. This facility is Zoho's first hub focused on AI and robotics in the state, representing a notable shift towards fostering innovation in rural areas.

Tech Talent in the Countryside

Situated within a 3.5-acre information technology park established by Zoho, the new centre began operations on July 2 and will grow to 250 employees. The company has ambitious plans for further expansion. What distinguishes this initiative is its location—far from metropolitan areas and nestled in a village—reflecting Zoho's commitment to fostering rural tech ecosystems.

Empowering Local Youth with AI and Robotics

To lay the foundation, Zoho has recruited and trained fresh graduates in cutting-edge technologies—around 40 fresh graduates from nearby rural areas. These young professionals will receive training in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, robotics, and various engineering disciplines, providing them with a launchpad into advanced technology careers.

A Vision to Bring Jobs to People

“We aim to generate high-tech employment opportunities where people already reside, rather than forcing them to migrate to crowded cities,” stated Sridhar Vembu, co-founder of Zoho Corporation, during the centre’s inauguration. The facility is designed not only to foster innovation but also to drive inclusive rural development by bringing advanced technology roles to communities traditionally left out of India’s digital progress.

Changing the Narrative of Innovation

“This project demonstrates that research and cutting-edge innovation are possible outside of India’s big-city tech hubs,” remarked Dr. Jayaraj Poroor, principal researcher at Zoho. Zoho’s rural-first approach could serve as a blueprint for other tech companies aiming to balance growth with social responsibility, blending high-end research with inclusive regional development.

A Star-Studded Inauguration

The launch event was graced by several prominent leaders, including Hon'ble Chief Minister of Kerala Shri Pinarayi Vijayan and Hon'ble Minister for Finance Shri K. N. Balagopal, along with Zoho Corporation’s co-founders Sridhar Vembu, Tony Thomas, and Shailesh Kumar Davey. The event was also graced by Dr. S. Somanath, former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and Dr. Jayaraj Poroor, Zoho’s principal researcher.
