Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister of Electronics and IT, Government of India, officially unveiled TDK Corporation’s cutting-edge lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility in Sohna, Haryana. This momentous inauguration underscores a pivotal stride in realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a self-reliant India—what he calls “Atmanirbhar Bharat”. The minister highlighted that, over the coming years, India aims to domestically produce all key electronic components—including camera modules, PCB assemblies, semiconductors, and batteries—marking this new plant as a significant milestone in that journey.
Boosting Domestic Production of Li-ion Batteries
Vaishnaw noted that India’s first domestically manufactured chips were presented to the Prime Minister during the Semicon India 2025 event. Building on that progress, the new facility will now deliver lithium-ion batteries for mobile phones, wearables, hearables (such as smart watches, earbuds, and AirPods), and laptops—right here in India.
Massive Capacity to Meet India’s Needs
The state-of-the-art plant is designed to churn out approximately 20 crore (200 million) battery packs annually—about 40 per cent of the nation’s estimated demand of 50 crore packs each year. With substantial scope for future scaling, this facility is poised to significantly reinforce India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
Jobs, Training, & Strategic Collaboration
Set up under the Government of India’s Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) Scheme, the plant is expected to directly generate employment for around 5,000 individuals. Training has already commenced at TDK’s AT Bawal facility to ensure readiness. Vaishnaw also extended his gratitude to the Haryana government for its instrumental support in establishing this electronics manufacturing hub.
