Apple is poised to unveil the second generation of its popular item tracker, the AirTag 2, as early as May or June 2025. This upcoming release promises significant enhancements in tracking capabilities and user privacy, marking a notable evolution from its predecessor.

AirTag 2: Enhanced Tracking Capabilities

The AirTag 2 is expected to feature Apple's next-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip, which debuted in the iPhone 15 lineup. This advancement could potentially triple the device's tracking range, allowing users to locate items from up to 90 metres away, compared to the current 30-metre limit. Such an improvement would be particularly beneficial in scenarios like locating misplaced luggage in crowded airports or finding lost keys in expansive areas.

Strengthened Privacy Measures

Apple is reportedly improving the AirTag 2 by enhancing its built-in speaker to make it harder to tamper with. This change aims to alert users quickly if an unknown AirTag is moving with them, helping to keep people safe.

Seamless Integration

The AirTag 2 is anticipated to integrate seamlessly with Apple's Vision Pro headset, providing users with augmented reality overlays to assist in locating tagged items. This feature would offer a more intuitive and interactive experience, guiding users visually to their lost belongings.

Design and Pricing Expectations

While significant internal upgrades are on the horizon, the AirTag 2 is expected to retain the sleek, compact design of its predecessor. Pricing is likely to remain consistent, with individual units priced at $29 and a four-pack available for $99, maintaining its position as an affordable accessory within Apple's product lineup.

AirTag 2's Anticipated Release Timeline

According to industry insiders, including Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the AirTag 2 is slated for release in mid-2025, aligning with Apple's typical product launch schedule. This timing suggests that consumers can expect the new device to become available in the coming months.
