Assam is set to get a major addition to its power generation capacity, with Adani Power beginning work on a 3,200 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant at Chapar in Dhubri district. Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for the project on September 20. The plant, being developed by Adani Power Limited (APL), involves an investment of around ₹48,000 crore.

The project is expected to create up to 20,000 jobs during the construction phase and around 5,000 jobs once the plant becomes operational. Commissioning is planned in phases from December 2030.

3,200 MW Assam power project: What is planned?

The Chapar plant will have four units of 800 MW each and will use ultra-supercritical technology. The technology is designed to improve the efficiency of coal-based power generation by operating at higher temperatures and pressures than conventional thermal plants.

Once operational, the project is expected to supply power for households, businesses and industries in Assam, while strengthening the state’s overall generation capacity. Adani Power has described the Chapar facility as a major addition to the Northeast’s power infrastructure.

The foundation stone ceremony was attended by senior state government officials, industry representatives, local community representatives and Jeet Adani, Director, Adani Group.

Part of ₹63,000 crore power investment in Assam

The Chapar project is part of a larger ₹63,000 crore power investment planned by the Adani Group in Assam. Of this amount, around ₹48,000 crore is earmarked for the thermal power plant. Another ₹15,000 crore is planned through Adani Green Energy Limited for two pumped storage projects with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW. Adani Energy Solutions is also working on smart metering projects in the state.

The projects are expected to be commissioned in phases, with the Chapar plant scheduled to begin commissioning from December 2030. Beyond the power sector, the Adani Group has said its investments across power, aviation and cement in Assam will exceed ₹80,000 crore. The company expects these projects to create jobs and generate business opportunities over the next three to four years.

Local businesses could also benefit

The impact of the Chapar project is expected to extend beyond direct employment at the plant. The project will require a wider network of contractors, suppliers, transport operators and service providers during construction and operations. This could create opportunities for local businesses to participate in the project’s supply and services ecosystem.
