Google has introduced Ask Google Pay, a new AI-powered financial assistant integrated into the Google Pay app. Built on the company’s Gemini AI models, the feature is designed to help users better understand their spending habits, answer finance-related questions in plain language, and provide personalised insights based on their transaction history.

The launch marks Google’s latest step towards making personal finance more accessible through conversational AI. Alongside the new assistant, the company has also expanded its Google Pay Flex credit programme by introducing the Google Pay Flex SBI Card, giving users another digital-first financial product within the app.

What is Ask Google Pay?

Ask Google Pay is an optional AI assistant that allows users to interact with their financial data using natural language instead of manually reviewing transaction histories or account statements. Users can simply type or speak questions such as, “How much did I spend on dining last month?”, “Where did most of my money go this week?” or “How can I reduce my monthly expenses?” The assistant analyses available financial information and returns easy-to-understand answers within seconds.

Powered by Google’s Gemini AI models, the feature currently supports 10 Indian languages and accepts both voice and text queries, making it accessible to a wider range of users.

AI-Powered Insights Based on Spending Patterns

Rather than only displaying past transactions, Ask Google Pay looks for spending trends and provides personalised recommendations. It analyses a user’s Google Pay transaction history and, where available, linked credit report information to generate meaningful financial insights.

For example, if spending on food delivery has steadily increased over several months, the AI can identify the pattern and highlight opportunities to reduce unnecessary expenses. It can also recommend financial products that better match a user’s lifestyle, including credit cards offering rewards for categories such as travel or shopping. The assistant is designed to provide context around spending instead of simply organising transactions, helping users make more informed financial decisions.

Making Financial Concepts Easier to Understand

Beyond expense tracking, Ask Google Pay also serves as a financial learning tool. Users can ask questions about concepts such as Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs), credit scores, compound interest, or the differences between India’s tax regimes and receive simple, conversational explanations. Instead of searching multiple websites or financial resources, users can continue asking follow-up questions within the same conversation, creating a more interactive learning experience.

Google Pay Flex SBI Card Also Introduced

Alongside the AI assistant, Google has expanded its Flex credit offering through a partnership with SBI Card. The new Google Pay Flex SBI Card, built on the RuPay network, allows eligible users to apply directly through the Google Pay app without physical paperwork. The card also supports Visa, offers reward points called Stars, where one Star equals ₹1, and provides the flexibility to convert eligible outstanding balances into EMIs, giving users another digital credit option integrated within the Google Pay ecosystem.
