Spain could soon become another destination where Indian travellers can use the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for everyday payments. India and Spain have started discussions on linking UPI with Bizum, Spain’s popular digital payment platform, in a move that could make it easier for Indian visitors to pay for meals, shopping, museum tickets and public transport without relying heavily on cash or international cards.

What travellers should know about UPI payments in Spain?
India and Spain have begun technical discussions on connecting UPI with Bizum to enable smoother cross-border digital payments. If the integration goes ahead, Indian travellers could potentially use their existing UPI-enabled payment apps to make payments at participating merchants in Spain.
The proposed link could offer greater convenience to Indian tourists, who would be able to make digital payments while travelling without having to carry cash or depend on international debit and credit cards. The move could also strengthen digital payment connectivity between the two countries and support the growing number of Indians travelling to Spain.

The discussions took place during Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal’s five-day visit to Spain from July 13 to 18, 2026. During the visit, Goyal met senior Spanish leaders, including Carlos Cuerpo Caballero, Spain’s First Vice-President and Minister of Economy, Trade and Business, and Jordi Hereu Boher, Spain’s Minister of Industry and Tourism.
However, UPI payments in Spain are not available yet. The proposal remains at the discussion stage and both countries will need to address several technical and regulatory requirements before the service can be launched. These include payment standards, settlement mechanisms, security protocols and regulatory compliance.

No official timeline has been announced for the rollout of UPI-Bizum integration. For now, Indian travellers visiting Spain will need to continue using existing payment options until the technical and regulatory process is completed. If implemented, the UPI-Bizum link could mark another step in the international expansion of India’s digital payments ecosystem, while giving Indian travellers a potentially simpler way to pay during their trips to Spain.
