In a significant move to reshape India's urban future, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced a comprehensive five-year initiative, pledging up to $10 billion to enhance urban infrastructure across the nation. ADB President Masatsugu Asakawa stated that this initiative is anchored by India's flagship Urban Challenge Fund (UCF), which the ADB is supporting to attract private investment for urban infrastructure.

The Key Areas

The $10 billion commitment will focus on several key areas:

- Developing growth hubs and promoting innovative urban development while improving water and sanitation systems in 100 urban centres.

- Investing in sustainable and resilient infrastructure to accommodate the increasing demands of urban populations.

- Providing technical assistance for designing viable projects and enhancing the capabilities of state and local urban bodies.

- Expanding metro and Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) projects covering 300 kilometres across eight major cities, including the Delhi-Meerut RRTS, Mumbai Metro, Nagpur Metro, Chennai Metro, and Bengaluru Metro.

- Implementing strategies to bolster city resilience against climate change impacts.

- Promoting skills development through the National Industrial Training Institute Upgradation Programme to strengthen the manufacturing sector and generate employment opportunities for the nation’s youth.
