In a landmark development for Northeast India, Aizawl—the capital city of Mizoram—has finally received official clearance for a long-pending railway link, effectively bringing it onto India’s railway map. The green light comes after the Railway Safety Commissioner approved the Bairabi-Sairang rail line, a key infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity in the region.
Fourth NE Capital to Join the Network
With this approval, Aizawl becomes the fourth capital city in the Northeastern region to gain direct railway connectivity, following Guwahati in Assam, Agartala in Tripura, and Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh. This significant milestone marks a new chapter in the government’s mission to strengthen transportation links in one of the country’s most remote areas.

Railway Safety Commissioner Clears Bairabi-Sairang Line
The official nod came after a detailed inspection by the Railway Safety Commissioner of the 51.38-kilometre Bairabi-Sairang rail corridor. The route, known for its engineering challenges, includes 87 minor bridges, 55 major bridges, and an impressive 32 tunnels, making it one of the most complex railway projects in Northeast India.
