The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India launches the pilot drive of the digital consent registry in coordination with the Reserve Bank of India. The digital consent registry project involves select banks and will operate under the regulatory sandbox framework. The project aims to curate a digital repository of consent obtained from the users to make commercial calls and messages.

The ongoing pilot drive aims to understand the challenges and opportunities, along with validating the operational, technical, and regulatory aspects of the consent registration function. This would produce a potential review of the processes, machinery, and later usage to formulate the necessary guidelines to proliferate this at a mass level and also ensure its compliance across the telcos and telemarketers.

A layer of privacy

This will ensure that the telcos seek digital consent from the users before making any commercial call or message. This would mark the beginning of enabling a safe telecom era through systemic and structured measures, making a long-term impact, and also preventing people from unnecessary hassles.

Filter of Choice

For businesses, this will filter out the potential customers based on their choice, which makes their work easier in a sea of people. This makes strategic targeting and customized marketing a near reality, as businesses will have greater access to consumers’ choices and patterns, driving better results without the consumer getting any unpleasant experience.

The pilot drive will lead to sector-wise implementation of the digital consent ecosystem.

Digital Consent Registry

The Digital Consent Registry is a secure and interoperable system that telecom operators use to record and verify user consent for commercial communications. Under the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations (TCCPR), businesses are allowed to send commercial calls and messages if they have the consumer’s explicit consent, even when the consumer is registered under Do Not Disturb (DND).
