Workers at Samsung’s Sriperumbudur factory have agreed to end their strike immediately, following consultations held with the company’s management.
What’s the Deal?
Bound by the agreement, the workers won’t be penalized for staging the strike while ensuring full cooperation with management. The workers have also agreed to avoid any action “prejudicial to the interests of the management”.
At the same time, the company has been instructed to file a written reply against the charter of demands submitted by the workers before the conciliation officer.
Reason of Strike
The workers at the Sriperumbudur plant Samsung began the strike in September followed by a nascent strike at Samsung’s South Korea Plant demanding Higher Wages. It affected around half of Samsung’s daily production held for Refrigerators and Washing Machines at the plant.
Earlier Efforts
Earlier efforts by the state government were tendered redundant as neither the workers agreed to end the strike nor the management conceded to the demands while also not recognizing the union.
MoU
Samsung India ELctronics has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a section of the striking workers. It aims to resolve the issue faced by the workmen mutually and also agrees to a slew of demands raised by the workers.
Samsung, Sriprembudur Plant
Samsung at the Sriperumbudur plant manufactures televisions, refrigerators, and washing machines which contribute to around 20-30% of Samsung Electronics’ revenue of $12 billion in India. It is one of the two plants operated by Samsung in India. The Second one is in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
