In a historic step towards digital empowerment for all, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has launched Skill India Assistant (SIA) — an artificial intelligence-driven chatbot aimed at revolutionizing Indian citizens' access to skilling, training, and employment assistance.
A Meta and NSDC Initiative
SIA was developed collaboratively by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and Meta. It functions through WhatsApp and the Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH) to provide individualized advice on courses, training centers, and job opportunities, even in areas with low bandwidth.
AI base, Tailored for India
Developed on Meta's open-source LLaMA model, the chatbot offers assistance in English, Hindi, and Hinglish, both text and voice-based, and is thus made accessible to lower-literate or digitally less-experienced users. SIA is 24/7 available and signifies India's first large-scale use of open-source AI in a national public skilling mission.
Features That Make It Work for Bharat
From AI-driven course recommendations to real-time doubt clearing, SIA aims to democratize access to skill development tools — especially for youth, rural populations, and persons with disabilities. The government is also running a social media awareness campaign to promote widespread adoption.
