Meta, led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, is boldly steering toward a future where traditional smartphones may no longer be central to our digital lives. The company is constructing an integrated ecosystem anchored by smart glasses and AR devices, aiming to fundamentally reshape how we engage with digital content.

Bridging the Gap to Hands-Free Tech

Under Meta’s umbrella, innovative projects such as Supernova and Hypernova are pushing technological boundaries rather than merely improving on existing innovation. The Supernova model targets users with active lifestyles—think cyclists and outdoor lovers—by packing in built-in speakers and cameras along with AI-driven features that allow hands-free access to vital information.

In contrast, the Hypernova design embeds a micro-display in the right lens. While it doesn’t yet offer full augmented reality, it brings notifications, images, and messages right into the user's field of vision. At a price of around $1,000, it’s a premium product aimed squarely at tech enthusiasts seeking more advanced wearables.

Orion & Artemis: Ushering in True Augmented Reality

Meta’s ambitions don’t stop there. The company is racing toward immersive AR with its Orion and Artemis initiatives. The Orion prototype, introduced last year, represents an early leap into fully interactive AR. It leverages a wristband to interpret muscle movements and pairs it with an external processing unit to manage intense computational demands. At approximately $10,000, Orion is tailored for developers and early adopters, with a consumer-ready version expected in 2026.

Following closely is Artemis, projected for a 2027 release. Designed to be lighter and more seamlessly integrated, this wearable aims to make augmented reality user-friendly and comfortable for daily use through advanced control systems.

An Ecosystem Beyond Eyewear

Meta envisions a broader, interconnected wearable ecosystem—not just glasses. This includes AI-enabled earbuds with cameras that analyse your surroundings in real time, providing deeper context-aware digital experiences. A smartwatch is also under development, meant to unify Meta's devices into a cohesive interactive platform, although it has encountered ongoing development challenges.
