Apple has joined forces with Reliance Jio in what marks its very first telecom partnership in India. Through this collaboration, iPhone users on Jio’s network can now send Rich Communication Services (RCS) messages—an upgrade that brings features once exclusive to iMessage right to their devices.

Enhanced Features at No Extra Cost
With RCS support, these iPhones can now display the familiar blue ticks, share high-resolution photos and videos, and deliver real-time typing indicators and read receipts—all without additional charges. Users enjoy a richer, more interactive messaging experience over both Wi-Fi and cellular data.
A Strategic Move to Shake Up Messaging Norms
This alliance comes as RCS adoption gains momentum in India, positioning the country as a leading market in global usage. The partnership aims to challenge the dominance of apps like WhatsApp, especially given Jio's vast subscriber base of over 494 million.

Apple’s Indian telecom venture arrives at a time when regulatory and consumer pressure is mounting for cross-platform messaging interoperability. Experts note that carriers worldwide are rapidly embracing RCS—countries like the U.S. and Germany have seen adoption rates climb past 75 per cent—and Apple’s move stands to accelerate that trend locally.
Addressing Enterprise & Spam Concerns
Beyond consumer chats, RCS also opens a new channel for enterprise communications, offering banks and e-commerce platforms a more engaging alternative to SMS. Yet, not all telecom players are on board—Bharti Airtel, for instance, has declined to support RCS, citing concerns over potential spam, and has even sought tighter regulation for messaging platforms.
