Apple is poised to enter the foldable phone market in 2026, as recent reports indicate that the company has commenced development on a device referred to by the code name V68. This marks its first significant design departure in years. Reports describe a design resembling a book-style fold, akin to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series, which opens up into a compact tablet-sized display. The device is expected to drop Face ID in favour of Touch ID and will likely eliminate the physical SIM slot.

Timeline & Production

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s supply chain has already started development, with plans to ramp up production in early 2026. A possible fall release window is now in sight. At present, the working prototypes appear limited to just black and white colour options. The foldable iPhone is expected to house Apple’s upcoming C2 modem chip, marking the company’s first internally developed cellular modem. This chip is also anticipated to power the forthcoming iPhone 18 Pro series.

Reducing the Crease

One of the most visible drawbacks of many foldable phones is the crease in the display. Apple initially considered on-cell touch sensors, but these posed a risk of creating small air gaps that emphasised the crease. To address this, Apple has reportedly shifted to in-cell touch technology, similar to what’s used in standard iPhones, likely reducing crease visibility and enhancing touch responsiveness.

Four Cameras. Touch ID Returns

The rumoured camera setup consists of four lenses: one on the front, one inside the fold, and two on the back. Instead of Face ID, Touch ID may return—possibly integrated into the power or side button—to maintain a slender frame.

Price Tag and Expectations

Leaks suggest a starting price around $1,999, approximately Rs 1.75 lakh in India. If accurate, that would place it above Apple’s current Pro Max models, though strong demand—especially among loyal customers and foldable enthusiasts—is still expected.
