Bharti Airtel has crossed a significant global milestone, reaching 650 million customers, and cementing its position as the world’s second-largest telecom operator by subscriber base.

Led by Sunil Bharti Mittal, the company has steadily expanded its footprint across India and Africa, building a diverse and growing user base. In India, Airtel serves more than 368 million mobile subscribers, according to GSMA Intelligence. Its services extend beyond mobility, with around 13 million homes connected through fixed broadband and another 15 million customers using its Digital TV offerings.

Airtel’s international presence is anchored by Airtel Africa, which operates in 14 countries and caters to 179 million customers. The business provides a mix of voice, high-speed data, and mobile money services, with over 52 million users actively relying on its financial platform—highlighting the growing importance of digital payments in emerging markets.

Despite its global scale, Airtel remains the second-largest telecom operator within India, trailing Reliance Jio, which surpassed the 500 million subscriber mark last year but operates solely in the domestic market.

Commenting on the achievement, Gopal Vittal, Executive Vice Chairman of Airtel, described the milestone as both an accomplishment and a responsibility. He emphasised the company’s continued focus on enhancing customer experience through innovation and dependable services, while aiming to raise industry benchmarks.

Airtel has also been an early mover in next-generation connectivity, among the first operators to roll out 5G services across India. This push aligns with broader shifts in user behaviour, where demand for high-speed data continues to outpace traditional voice services.

According to a report by Kotak Equities, Airtel’s overall subscriber base has grown at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.9 per cent between FY21 and FY26. Notably, its data subscriber segment has expanded at a much faster pace of 9.7 per cent, reflecting a steady increase in higher-value users.

The report also points to untapped potential, particularly in rural markets and mobile broadband adoption. Nearly one-fifth of Airtel’s users are still on 2G and 3G networks, presenting a clear opportunity for the company to transition customers to faster, more premium services.

As Airtel scales further, its growth story is likely to be shaped not just by expanding reach, but by how effectively it upgrades and deepens engagement across its existing base.
