The government is all set to notify the New Telecom Policy (NTP), which aims to double the telecom product exports and advocate universal adoption at affordable rates by 2030. The policy currently stands in the consultation phase, where the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is currently aggregating suggestions and recommendations from the stakeholders.
The department aims to increase the information and communications technology (ICT) sector's contribution to India's GDP from 7.8% to 11% by 2030 and attract annual investment of ₹1.5 lakh crore in telecom infrastructure, as per the report by ET. The NTP being formulated aims to push India’s capabilities in telecom manufacturing and global leadership in telecom technology. It will focus on emerging areas like 6G, quantum communications, AI, cybersecurity, etc.
Focus on Jobs
Through the NTP, the government aims to focus on generating more jobs as a part of its policy by focusing more on bringing investments in the telecom sector to push manufacturing as well as technological innovation.
"The NTP 2025 will be notified soon with aims and targets to be achieved by 2030," one of the officials told ET.

Amalgamation of Networks
The government aims to envision an amalgamation of terrestrial and satellite networks, facilitating reliable connectivity across the nation through the NTP. In a bid to realize this goal, the government has recently opened up India’s satcom space by giving licenses to providers like Jio-SES, Airtel’s Eutelsat Oneweb, and other foreign companies like Starlink, with Amazon’s Kuiper in line.
This presents a really big and completely new business avenue for companies and new entrants to try their best, as this would be India’s go-to service when it comes to hard-to-reach areas and others with terrain difficulties.
Coverage
The NTP targets to achieve complete 4G coverage across the nation while achieving 90 percent of 5G coverage across the country. With this, the government intends to achieve the complete fiberization of all gram panchayats under BharatNet and provide fiber connectivity to all government institutions at the village level by 2030.

A Stronger Economy
The Indian telecom and technology sector is expected to grow from 7.8 percent to 11 percent of the nation’s GDP. Through the NTP, the government aims to attract around Rs 1.5 lakh crores in investments each year. This would give the Indian economy a much-needed boost, and also add immense value to the capital, employment, and social paradigms of the nation.
