Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia inaugurates the World Telecom Day 2025 event organised by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Tuesday. In his inauguration address, the minister applauded India’s telecom journey, coming from 61MB to about 21.5GB of data usage per day. The minister emphasizes the emergence of satcom, a new technology in the telecom domain, and calls upon the telcos to take it to new heights.

This year’s celebration focused on the globally relevant theme — “Universal and Meaningful Connectivity” (UMC) — aligning with TRAI’s mission to ensure inclusive, equitable, and sustainable access to communication services for all. UMC refers to not just providing access to communication networks but ensuring that such access is available, accessible, relevant, and affordable, enabling individuals and communities to fully participate in the digital economy and society.

6 Pillars of India's Telecom Foray

In his address, the Minister highlighted six key pillars of the Unified Messaging Concept (UMC) that have propelled India to the forefront of the global digital landscape: affordability, availability, access, quality of service (QoS), online safety and security, and technology. He also noted the growing importance of satellite-based telecommunications, particularly in extending connectivity to remote and underserved areas.

These innovations, he added, will complement terrestrial networks and play a crucial role in achieving the goal of universal digital access. Together, all these innovations and strides empower India’s digital journey, with telecom being the digital highway powering the transformation.

Eyeing a $ 20 Billion Market

“TRAI has come out with its regulations for administrative assignment. Multiple players have availed of a license, and I am very confident that this roll out on the satellite network as well will probably be the fastest in the world in the years to come, growing from the current $2.3 billion market to almost a $20 billion market by 2028,’ Scindia said, drawing parallels to the world’s fastest roll-out of fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks in the nation.

The minister seemed confident of India’s capabilities in terms of expansion on the side of operators and adoption on the end of the consumers and enterprises.  As of today, three companies have received their licenses from the DoT, including Eutelsat OneWeb, Jio-SES, and Starlink, of which Starlink is still awaiting permissions from IN-SPACe. While the airwaves still remain to be auctioned.

Commended Private Sector

We have deployed 9,300 towers, and another 11,000 towers will be installed. I must commend our private sector, which has led one of the fastest 5G rollouts across the world, the minister said.
