OpenAI has introduced a new subscription tier for Indian users, called ChatGPT Go, priced at Rs. 399 per month. The plan aims to enhance accessibility and affordability of AI by providing extended access to GPT-5. It also offers increased capabilities for generating images, analysing documents, and uploading files.

10x More Power for Subscribers

Announcing the launch on X, Nick Turley, Head of ChatGPT, revealed that Go subscribers will enjoy “10x higher message limits, 10x more image generations, 10x more file uploads, and 2x longer memory compared with our free tier.” OpenAI added in a blog post that these benefits may vary depending on system conditions to maintain a seamless user experience.

How to Subscribe

Starting today, Indian users can upgrade to the ChatGPT Go plan by logging into ChatGPT, clicking on their profile icon, and selecting “Upgrade Plan”. Payments can be made directly via UPI or credit card, making it convenient for a wide user base in the country.

Making ChatGPT More Affordable

Turley emphasised that affordability has always been a core goal for OpenAI, noting that “this has been one of the most frequent requests from users.” CEO Sam Altman has also highlighted India’s growing importance for the company, calling it one of the most vital markets. During his visit to India earlier this year, Altman revealed that ChatGPT’s user base in the country had tripled in just one year, making India the second-largest market for the platform.

Competition in India’s AI Market

The launch of ChatGPT Go comes at a time when rival Perplexity AI, led by Aravind Srinivas, has been gaining significant traction in India. In partnership with Airtel, Perplexity recently announced a free 12-month Pro subscription for Airtel’s 360 million users, positioning itself as a strong alternative in the AI chatbot space.

Expanding Beyond India

While India is the first to get the ChatGPT Go subscription, OpenAI confirmed that the plan will gradually be rolled out in other regions as well, signalling its intent to make advanced AI tools more widely available.
