The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has underscored the role of artificial intelligence (AI) as a core driver for the next stage of the country’s telecom sector evolution.

“AI is shifting from an idea of the future to an operational concept across networks and services,” said Anil Kumar Lahoti, Chairman. He said while addressing a pre-summit event for the India Impact Summit 2026.

AI Integration Viewed as Telecom Growth Catalyst

At a New Delhi event themed “AI in Telecommunication,” TRAI highlighted how AI tools are increasingly embedded in telecom operations, influencing areas such as network automation and spam management. “The technology is already helping service providers shape smarter, adaptive services at scale”, Lahoti added.

Officials from telecom operators, equipment makers, research bodies and startups attended the session organised by TRAI in collaboration with the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI). Arvind Kumar, Director General of STPI, described the shift from basic network infrastructure to what he called an “intelligent pipe” powered by AI systems.

Focus on Responsible Deployment and Industry Collaboration

The Telecom Authority has highlighted that AI adoption must ensure transparency, accountability and fairness. This is important for a smooth transition with India’s broader digital goals.

Discussions at the event covered AI-based techniques for customer engagement, predictive network maintenance and blocking unsolicited calls. Participants also investigated and discussed the frameworks for ethical AI use. Regulators and industry voices have worked for a balanced approach to innovation that balances data privacy and consumer trust.

The sessions looked ahead to the whole India Impact Summit 2026, which TRAI and STPI expect to position India as a hub for responsible, high-impact AI deployment in telecom.
