Google is accelerating its efforts to place Gemini at the centre of Android as the company prepares for a broader artificial intelligence(AI) battle with Apple, which will play a role in Apple’s future AI systems.

Gemini Becomes Core Layer Across Android Ecosystem

Google said Gemini Intelligence will move beyond a chatbot and function directly across Android devices, apps and services. The company introduced features that allow Gemini to complete tasks across multiple apps, automate workflows, fill forms, assist with bookings and provide contextual suggestions.

The AI expansion extends further beyond smartphones. Google announced deeper Gemini integration across cars, wearables, laptops and extended reality devices.

The company has also introduced “Googlebook,” a new Gemini-first laptop category that combines Android and Chrome OS capabilities.

Android 17 will include AI-led features focused on productivity, app interactions and security. Google also showcased upgrades to Android Auto, cross-device sharing and new personalisation tools powered by Gemini.

Google Sharpens AI Position Before Apple’s Siri Upgrade

Google’s latest announcements come while competition in consumer AI increases among major technology firms, including Apple, OpenAI and Anthropic.

Reports earlier this year said Apple selected Gemini models to support parts of its next-generation Siri experience under a multi-year partnership with Google. The deal is expected to strengthen Google’s position in the global AI race by expanding Gemini’s reach across billions of devices.

Google is also facing increasing regulatory scrutiny in Europe over how Gemini is integrated into Android devices. European Union regulators are reportedly examining whether rival AI assistants should receive equal access within Android ecosystems.

The announcements set the stage for Google I/O 2026 later this month, where the company is expected to unveil further Gemini updates, Android 17 features and AI-focused hardware products.
