India’s artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure race has gathered pace with Reliance Industries planning a large-scale AI data centre hub in Andhra Pradesh.

The move aligns with the state’s ambition to position itself as a digital infrastructure destination.

The proposed investment has come shortly after Google announced major expansion plans in the region, signalling rising interest among global and domestic technology firms in India’s data centre ecosystem.

Reliance is currently evaluating a large AI-focused data infrastructure project with plans for high-capacity computing, cloud services and future AI workloads.

The development aligns with India’s broader push to build sovereign digital infrastructure as demand for AI processing capacity accelerates across sectors, including telecom, fintech, manufacturing and governance.

Andhra Pradesh Emerges as New AI Infrastructure Destination

The move is expected to strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s positioning in India’s fast-growing data centre market. The state government has been actively pitching itself as an investment destination for technology, electronics and digital infrastructure projects through policy support, power availability and land access.

Industry observers say the back-to-back interest from Reliance and Google reflects a broader shift in how companies plan to deploy AI infrastructure in India. Data localisation requirements, rising enterprise AI adoption and increasing cloud demand are driving investments in hyperscale and AI-ready facilities.

The proposed hub is also expected to support India’s long-term ambitions around AI computing capacity and digital public infrastructure. Large AI data centres require significant power, cooling and connectivity infrastructure, making states with strong industrial and energy ecosystems more attractive for investments.

AI Data Centre Race Gains Momentum in India

India’s AI infrastructure expansion has intensified over the past year as companies compete to build capacity for generative AI services, enterprise automation and cloud computing.

Several states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh, have already announced major data centre policies and investment pipelines.

Reliance’s proposed entry into large-scale AI infrastructure could further intensify competition in the sector, especially as companies seek to integrate telecom networks, cloud platforms and AI services into a single ecosystem. Analysts say AI-led data demand is expected to significantly increase India’s requirement for advanced computing infrastructure over the next decade.
