India has received the fourth squadron of the Russian-origin S-400 air defence system, with defence officials highlighting advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled capabilities.
The new AI-enabled S-400 is expected to strengthen threat detection, tracking and response functions across the country’s air defence network.
The latest delivery falls under the USD 5.43 billion defence agreement signed between India and Russia in 2018.
While the S-400 programme has largely been viewed through a strategic and military lens, it’s induction also reflects a broader shift toward integrating AI-driven technologies into modern defence systems.

AI Integration Brings Technology Focus to Air Defence Operations
The newly delivered S-400 squadron is equipped with advanced software and automation features designed to process large volumes of battlefield data, identify potential threats and support faster decision-making during air defence operations.
Defence experts say modern air defence systems increasingly rely on artificial intelligence, sensor fusion and automated command-and-control functions to improve response times against a wide range of aerial threats. The AI-enabled architecture enables operators to analyse multiple targets simultaneously, reducing the time required for threat assessment.
The induction comes at a time when countries worldwide are investing heavily in military AI, autonomous defence systems and intelligent battlefield technologies to enhance operational productivity.

Boost for India’s Defence-Tech Modernisation Strategy
The arrival of the fourth squadron boosts India’s efforts to modernise its military infrastructure by deploying advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and other indigenous defence innovations.
The government has identified AI as a preference for future military capability development.
There are several other projects underway across surveillance, command systems, cybersecurity and unmanned platforms that also include AI & other latest tech.

The fifth and final S-400 squadron is expected to be delivered later in 2026, completing one of India’s most significant defence acquisitions.
