India’s telecom sector continues to expand, with the country’s total telephone subscriber base crossing 1.33 billion, according to the latest data by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The growth shows increasing mobile and internet usage across both urban and rural areas.

The telecom industry added millions of new users largely through wireless services. Mobile connections remain the backbone of India’s communications network, while broadband adoption is also rising steadily as more people come online.

Broadband subscribers have crossed the one-billion mark, supported by growing demand for digital services, online education, entertainment streaming, remote work, and AI-powered applications. The rapid rollout of 5G services and affordable smartphones has further encouraged internet usage, especially in smaller cities and rural regions.

Among telecom operators, Reliance Jio continues to lead the market in subscriber numbers, followed by Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Private telecom companies account for the overwhelming majority of India’s telecom users. A notable trend is the rise of 5G-based Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), which uses 5G networks to deliver broadband connectivity without traditional fibre infrastructure. The technology is gaining traction in areas where laying fibre cables is difficult or expensive.
