Karnataka is set to establish India’s first dedicated Artificial Intelligence (AI) university. The progress marks the state’s efforts to strengthen its position in India’s fast-growing AI ecosystem.

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced the plan while outlining the government’s vision to build Karnataka into India’s leading AI hub, building on Bengaluru’s long-standing reputation as the nation’s technology capital.

The proposed university is expected to support AI research, industry collaboration and skilled workforce development as India accelerates investments in artificial intelligence.

Karnataka expands AI ambitions beyond Bengaluru’s IT success

The state government said the proposed Artificial Intelligence university will focus on advanced education, research and innovation in AI.

It aims to equip students with industry-ready skills while supporting startups, businesses, and public institutions in adopting AI technologies.

“Karnataka has already established itself as India’s information technology powerhouse. The next phase of growth, he said, will be driven by artificial intelligence, deep technology and digital innovation.”

The announcement comes as governments across India compete to attract AI investments, data centres, semiconductor projects and global technology firms. Karnataka is positioning itself to remain at the centre of that growth by creating specialised academic and research infrastructure.

AI University to Support Talent, Research and Innovation

The institution is expected to bridge the gap between academia and industry by promoting AI-focused research, encouraging innovation & producing skilled professionals for emerging technology sectors.

The state government believes dedicated AI education will help meet the rising demand for specialists as businesses increasingly adopt generative AI, automation, robotics and machine learning across industries, including healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, financial services, and governance.

Karnataka is already home to thousands of technology companies, startups, global capability centres (GCCs) and research facilities, making it one of India’s strongest innovation ecosystems.
