Adani Group has proposed investing nearly ₹1 trillion to build a large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) data centre in Odisha, marking one of the biggest private investments in India’s digital infrastructure sector. As part of the proposal, the conglomerate has sought around 250 acres of land from the state government. If the project moves ahead, it could become one of India’s largest AI-ready data centre developments, second only to Google’s planned 1-gigawatt facility in Andhra Pradesh.

The proposal is currently being evaluated by the Odisha government, with officials assessing several key factors before granting approval. These include land availability, power infrastructure, water supply, connectivity, and the overall feasibility of supporting a project of this scale. According to officials familiar with the matter, Cuttack has emerged as a possible location, although a final site has not yet been confirmed.
The proposed facility aligns with Adani Group’s broader strategy to expand its presence in AI infrastructure and hyperscale data centres. The company has previously announced plans to invest $100 billion by 2035 to develop renewable energy-powered, AI-ready data centres across India. At present, Adani operates a data centre in Chennai through its joint venture with Sweden-based EdgeConneX, which is owned by EQT, while additional facilities are under development in Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad.

Unlike its Chennai operation, the Odisha project is planned as a standalone investment. The company has also sought a range of incentives from the state government to support the development. Officials said that once the proposal satisfies all technical and policy requirements, including the incentive framework, it will be placed before the state’s high-level clearance authority, chaired by the Chief Minister, for statutory approvals.

If approved, the investment could significantly strengthen Odisha’s position in India’s fast-growing AI and data centre ecosystem. The project is expected to enhance the state’s digital infrastructure, attract technology investments, and support the country’s rising demand for AI computing capacity, cloud services, and hyperscale data storage. With AI adoption accelerating across industries, large-scale data centres are increasingly becoming critical infrastructure for India’s digital economy.
