AI company Anthropic has launched Fable 5, a new version of its AI technology, for general users. The model is part of the company’s advanced Mythos family, which was introduced in April but was previously available only to a small group of partner organisations. Anthropic says Fable 5 can help with software coding, research tasks, and image analysis.
Safety Controls Remain in Place
The company has added restrictions to prevent misuse of the model. Anthropic said Fable 5 has strong capabilities in cybersecurity and could identify weaknesses in critical systems such as banking networks and power grids.

To reduce risks, many cybersecurity, biology, and chemistry-related requests will be redirected to a less powerful model called Opus 4.8. Anthropic also said attempts to use the model for training rival AI systems will trigger similar restrictions.
Unrestricted Version for Selected Organisations
At the same time, Anthropic is providing an unrestricted version called Claude Mythos 5 to approved organisations. These include cybersecurity partners in its Project Glasswing program. The program recently expanded to around 200 organisations across more than 15 countries.
Testing and Security Reviews
Anthropic said it hired outside experts to spend more than 1,000 hours trying to bypass the model’s safety protections. The company also ran a bug bounty program, but no participant was able to fully remove the restrictions.

The US government has also tested the Mythos model as part of efforts to review powerful AI systems before public release.
Pricing and Business Challenges
Fable 5 is priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. This makes it twice as expensive as Opus 4.8.
Despite strong revenue growth, Anthropic is still not profitable. The company continues to spend heavily on computing infrastructure and recently signed a major data centre leasing agreement with xAI.

The launch comes as competition in the AI sector continues to grow. Anthropic and OpenAI have both recently announced plans related to public market listings, while SpaceX is also preparing for a highly anticipated market debut.
