Jeff Bezos is stepping back into a hands-on leadership role for the first time since leaving Amazon’s CEO position in 2021. The Amazon founder has taken on the position of co-CEO at a new artificial intelligence startup called Project Prometheus, marking a significant return to day-to-day operations.
Project Prometheus has already made headlines for securing an impressive $6.2 billion in early-stage funding, with Bezos himself contributing to the investment. Rather than building consumer-facing tools like chatbots, the startup is focused on bringing advanced AI into the “physical economy.” Its mission is to develop AI-powered systems for engineering and manufacturing across industries such as computing, automotive, and aerospace.

Bezos will share the leadership role with Vik Bajaj, a physicist and chemist known for his previous work at Google’s X lab and for co-founding Verily. Together, they are steering the company toward building AI that can solve complex, real-world industrial challenges.
The startup has quietly assembled a powerful talent roster, reportedly hiring nearly 100 employees, including experts drawn from leading AI research hubs such as OpenAI, DeepMind, and Meta. Despite this rapid growth, many aspects of the company remain under wraps, including its long-term strategy, technology roadmap, and location details. Its public description remains minimal, stating only that it is developing “AI for the physical economy.”

Bezos’s return to an operational position highlights a shift in his professional focus. While he continues to be involved in ventures like Blue Origin, he no longer holds an executive title there. Now, with Project Prometheus, he is re-entering the world of direct leadership at a time when the global AI race is accelerating. The company aims to carve out a distinct niche by applying artificial intelligence to complex physical systems rather than purely digital applications.
With its substantial funding, star leadership, and highly skilled team, Project Prometheus is positioning itself as a major new player in the industrial AI landscape — even as much of its work remains shielded from the public eye.
