Meta Launches Muse Code AI Coding Agent to Challenge OpenAI and Anthropic

Meta has unveiled Muse Code, its first AI coding agent powered by Muse Spark 1.2, challenging OpenAI and Anthropic with advanced coding capabilities and competitive pricing.

Meta has stepped up its artificial intelligence (AI) ambitions with the launch of Muse Code. It is a dedicated AI coding agent, intensifying competition with rival developer tools from OpenAI and Anthropic.

The new product, unveiled on Tuesday, is designed to help software developers write, edit, debug and test code while handling longer and more complex programming tasks with limited human input.

The launch marks Meta’s latest push to strengthen its position in the fast-growing AI software development market, where coding assistants have quickly become one of the industry’s most sought-after applications.

Meta Expands its AI Developer Portfolio

Muse Code is powered by Muse Spark 1.2, Meta’s latest AI model developed by its Meta Superintelligence Labs.

The company said the coding agent can work across large software projects, execute multiple coding tasks simultaneously through sub-agents and continue working from where it stopped using a persistent activity log if interrupted.

The product is currently available in beta through a terminal-based interface, giving developers an AI assistant capable of planning code changes, generating new code and verifying whether those changes function correctly before deployment.

Pricing Targets Developers and Startups

Meta is also competing aggressively on price. The company has introduced a pay-as-you-go pricing model, charging US$1.25 per million input tokens and US$4.25 per million output tokens.

It is also offering a significantly lower-cost contributor tier for developers willing to allow Meta to use their coding activity to improve future AI models.

The strategy positions Muse Code against OpenAI’s Codex and Anthropic’s Claude Code, whose premium offerings typically rely on monthly subscriptions or higher usage-based pricing.

AI Coding Race Gathers Pace

The launch reflects Meta’s broader effort to regain momentum in generative AI after reorganising its AI business under Alexandr Wang, who leads Meta Superintelligence Labs.

Muse Code builds on the earlier release of the Muse Spark model family and signals the company’s growing focus on AI-powered software engineering tools.

As competition among major AI companies shifts beyond chatbots towards autonomous software development, coding agents are emerging as a key battleground. Meta is betting that lower pricing combined with advanced coding capabilities will attract developers looking for alternatives to existing platforms.

Meta’s entry into AI coding adds fresh pressure on OpenAI and Anthropic, reinforcing that the next phase of the AI race will be driven not only by model performance but also by developer adoption, pricing and enterprise software integration.
