OpenAI is building an energy desk internally to take greater control of the electricity and natural gas needs of its expanding data centre network.
The move includes dedicated roles for power trading and clean energy as the artificial intelligence (AI) company looks to manage energy costs, supply risks and the growing power demands of its infrastructure.

OpenAI to Bring Power Trading In-House
OpenAI is hiring a Power Trading Lead within its Power & Land team. The role will focus on managing exposure to electricity and natural gas, including strategies to protect the company against energy price volatility.
The move marks a shift from treating power largely as a procurement issue to managing it as an active part of OpenAI’s data centre operations.
The company is also looking for a Clean Energy and New Technology Lead within its Industrial Compute organisation, which handles data centre site selection and construction.
That role will assess clean power, energy storage, grid flexibility and low-carbon backup technologies that could be deployed across OpenAI’s growing data centre footprint.

Project Camellia Shows OpenAI’s Energy Strategy
OpenAI’s planned 3.2 gigawatt (GW) Project Camellia in Effingham County, Georgia, provides an example of how the company is approaching power management.
Under a 25-year agreement, OpenAI has committed to providing Georgia Power with up to 1,000 megawatts (MW) of flexible demand response.
The energy strategy comes as data centre projects face growing power and regulatory challenges.
OpenAI reportedly paused its Stargate UK project because of energy costs and regulatory hurdles, while Microsoft later took over capacity at the Stargate Norway site.
