India’s public broadcaster, Prasar Bharati, has issued a fresh set of test reports on Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) broadcasting technology. The report states that the system has successfully passed telecom coexistence checks during field checks.

The development marks another step in the broadcaster’s push to expand D2M services in India amid growing interest in next-generation content delivery and emergency broadcasting systems.

The report has been released as part of ongoing trials to understand whether D2M signals can operate alongside existing mobile telecom networks without causing interference.

The tests were conducted with support from technology and research stakeholders involved in the pilot programme.

D2M Trials Focus on Network Compatibility

According to the recent statistics, the D2M setup was tested for coexistence with cellular networks across multiple structures.

“The trials showed that broadcasting signals and telecom services could coexist without harmful disruption.”

-said Prasar Bharati officials

D2M technology allows video, audio and data content to be delivered directly to smartphones without relying heavily on internet bandwidth or mobile data networks. The system is being positioned as a potential solution for content distribution during periods of high network congestion and emergencies.

The broadcasting body worked with research institutions and technology partners to test the feasibility of large-scale D2M deployment in India. The findings will support ongoing discussions around spectrum use & policy frameworks linked to broadcast and telecom convergence.

Push for Broadcast-Tech Expansion Gains Pace

The publication of the latest reports comes as India increases focus on digital infrastructure, public communication systems and indigenous broadcast technologies. Industry observers see D2M as part of the broader push towards spectrum efficiency and hybrid broadcast-broadband services.

Prasar Bharati has previously demonstrated the technology at industry events and pilot projects, highlighting its potential for live TV streaming, educational content, disaster alerts, and public service communication.

The fresh coexistence results are likely to strengthen the case for future commercial trials and ecosystem partnerships involving handset makers, broadcasters and telecom stakeholders.
