Paytm is moving beyond digital payments and into enterprise artificial intelligence with a new service called Paytm Intelligence, or Pi. The fintech company is developing AI agents that can handle tasks across sales, customer service and business operations.

Pi will initially target banks, lenders, insurers and other financial institutions in India and the UAE. The move comes as competition in India’s digital payments market makes it harder for fintech companies to find new growth opportunities in their core businesses.

What is Paytm Intelligence (Pi)?

Paytm Intelligence, or Pi, is Paytm’s new enterprise AI service designed to help financial institutions automate business processes using AI agents. Unlike conventional software that performs a fixed task, AI agents can be designed to manage multiple steps within a workflow with limited human supervision.

Paytm’s Pi can support functions such as customer service, sales and operations. Its agents can assess customer requirements, run campaigns, identify potential customers and support cross-selling to existing customers. Paytm has already started offering Pi to a small number of customers and plans to expand the service, according to people familiar with the business.

Why is Paytm moving into enterprise AI?

Paytm’s core payments business operates in a highly competitive market, where companies have been under pressure to find higher-margin sources of revenue. The company has also been working to rebuild its business after regulatory challenges disrupted its operations two years ago. Paytm has since returned to revenue growth and profitability, but the competitive nature of digital payments continues to limit expansion opportunities.

Enterprise AI offers Paytm another route to monetise the technology, financial data and customer insights it has accumulated over years of operating a large payments platform. The company is not alone in looking towards AI. Fintech businesses globally are investing in artificial intelligence to automate operations, improve customer experiences and develop new products and services.

What AI model is behind Paytm Pi?

At the centre of Pi is a financial services AI model that Paytm has reportedly been developing for around two years. The model has been trained using large numerical datasets built up through Paytm’s experience in processing financial transactions and analysing customer behaviour.

According to people familiar with the project, the model can be used for areas such as fraud prediction, creditworthiness assessment and evaluating the credibility of insurance claims. This financial focus could give Pi an advantage in enterprise use cases where understanding transactions, risk and customer behaviour is important.

How can Paytm’s AI agents help financial companies?

Paytm sees Pi as more than a customer-service chatbot. Its AI agents are being designed to work across several parts of a financial business. Potential applications include identifying customer needs, supporting sales campaigns, acquiring new customers and recommending additional products to existing customers.

For banks, insurers and lenders, this could mean using AI to handle repetitive workflows while allowing employees to focus on more complex decisions and customer interactions. The broader idea is to turn Paytm’s experience in payments, behavioural analytics, voice technology and workflow automation into an enterprise technology business.

Paytm increases its focus on AI

Paytm has also signalled plans to increase its use of AI internally. The company intends to hire around 4,000 people by early next year as it expands its merchant network and develops AI-driven products.

The Pi initiative represents a significant change in direction for Paytm. The company, founded by Vijay Shekhar Sharma in 2010, began with prepaid mobile recharges before becoming one of India’s best-known digital payments companies.

Today, it competes with major players such as PhonePe and Google Pay in India’s digital payments market. With Pi, Paytm is now looking to take technology developed around its financial ecosystem and sell it to other businesses.

What does Paytm’s Pi launch mean for fintech?

The launch reflects a wider shift in India’s fintech sector. After years of focusing heavily on customer acquisition, transaction volumes and rapid digital adoption, fintech companies are increasingly looking for ways to generate revenue from their technology, data and infrastructure.

For Paytm, enterprise AI could provide one such opportunity. If Pi gains traction among banks, insurers and lenders, Paytm would be moving from being primarily a payments and financial-services platform to becoming an enterprise technology provider as well.
