A Gurugram-based startup, Proxgy, has developed ThumbPay, a biometric payment device that links Aadhaar to UPI, enabling transactions using just a thumbprint. With ThumbPay, users will be able to make payments without needing QR codes, smartphones, or even cards.

How Does ThumbPay Work?

The system combines the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS) for identity verification through thumb biometrics with UPI for instant bank-to-bank payments. A user simply places their thumb on the device. Once identity is confirmed via Aadhaar, funds are debited from the Aadhaar-linked bank account using UPI.

Why It Matters

ThumbPay removes the dependence on smartphones, QR code scanning, cards, and even continuous power supply, making payments more accessible, especially for people without smartphones or with limited digital access. The device is battery-powered and built to work even in rural or low-connectivity areas. It has already undergone closed-loop pilot testing.

Regulatory Status & Rollout Plans

Proxy is seeking compliance approvals from UIDAI (for Aadhaar) and NPCI (for UPI integration). Once approvals are obtained, the company plans a phased rollout beginning with leading banks and fintech firms before expanding nationwide.

Potential Challenges

While the technology promises inclusion, its adoption will depend on regulatory clearance, public trust in biometric systems, infrastructure support in remote areas, and cost. Merchants will need ThumbPay devices, and users will need to trust that their biometric data is handled securely.
