Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, sets a new record as it incubates over 100 startups, precisely 104 in the financial year 2024-25. With this feat, IIT Madras achieves the 'Startup 100 Mission' envisioned by Director Professor V. Kamakoti at the start of 2024.
Among the 104 incubated startups, over 50% of startups are founded by IIT Madras faculty, staff, and alumni. The rest came from external entrepreneurs, highlighting the strength and inclusivity of the institute’s startup ecosystem. Through the collaborative efforts of the IIT Madras Incubation Cell (IITMIC) and the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, 104 startups were fostered in 2024–25.
Sectors covered
Spanning crucial deep-tech fields, these startups are making strides in manufacturing, robotics, automotive materials, defense, aerospace, health tech, space, pharmaceuticals, and quantum technologies. Leaders of startups such as Inbound Aerospace and Matterize commended IITMIC's unwavering support and mentorship in transforming their ideas into thriving businesses.

Achieving the Impossible
As IIT Madras achieves the impossible, Professor Prabhu Rajagopal, Head of the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, reflected on how a goal that once seemed impossible has now been achieved through systematic support for translational research. Meanwhile, Dr. Tamaswati Ghosh, CEO of IIT Madras Incubation Cell (IITMIC), underscored the growth from an average of 60 startups per year to this historic 104.

Over the past 12 years, IIT Madras has cultivated a robust deep-tech startup ecosystem, now home to 457 startups with a combined valuation exceeding Rs 50,000 crores, two unicorns, and many more successes on the horizon.
This marks a groundbreaking stride in India’s startup industry as the industry gathers pace to maneuver its way through to promote, nurture, and accelerate innovation and transformation in the nation.
