A cyber espionage campaign linked to China has targeted research institutions working in artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, defence and medical science, raising fresh concerns about the protection of sensitive research and strategic data.
According to findings shared by Google’s Threat Intelligence Group, the operation remained active for more than a year and focused on organisations across North America involved in advanced research programmes.
The attackers reportedly sought information related to military planning, AI development, cyberwarfare capabilities, unmanned systems and public health research.

Attack Focused on High-Value Research Programmes
Security researchers said the hackers infiltrated academic, medical and military research networks between September 2023 and November 2025.
The campaign appears to have been aimed at gathering intelligence rather than causing disruption. Experts noted that information linked to AI innovation, defence technologies and strategic planning has become increasingly valuable as global competition in emerging technologies intensifies.

Google Uncovers Complex Intrusion
Researchers attributed the activity to a group tracked as UNC6508. The hackers allegedly exploited weaknesses in research software systems and used stolen credentials to maintain access to targeted networks.
Investigators later found evidence that sensitive emails and research-related communications were quietly redirected to attacker-controlled accounts.
Google said it has since notified affected organisations and taken action to disrupt parts of the operation. Security experts have urged institutions involved in AI, defence and critical technology research to strengthen authentication systems and review access controls.
