India’s push to build quantum technology capabilities took centre stage at the Convergence India Expo 2026. A keynote session highlighted the scope of the National Quantum Mission across sectors, including communications, healthcare and finance.

Speaking at the Transformation Stage, Dr J. B. V. Reddy, Head of the Quantum Technology Cell (QTC) at the Department of Science & Technology, said that quantum technologies are expected to strengthen data security, improve diagnostics, and support faster data processing.

Applications Across Sectors in Focus

Reddy said quantum systems can enhance secure communication networks and enable more accurate, less invasive diagnostic tools in healthcare. He added that the technology could reduce timelines in drug discovery and improve efficiency in financial data analysis.

The address emphasised the role of quantum computing in handling large datasets, a growing requirement as industries scale their digital operations. The focus remains on practical applications rather than experimental deployment.

Focus on Indigenous Development and Talent

The government is setting up quantum computing fabrication and centralised facilities across institutions such as the IITs and IISc. These centres are expected to support research and enable startups to build prototype quantum processors, sensors and related technologies within India.

Reddy said the initiative also includes training programmes aimed at developing skills in quantum hardware, device fabrication and system integration. The objective is to build a domestic ecosystem that supports long-term sector development.

The session reflected a broader policy direction to strengthen India’s position in deep technology areas, with quantum identified as a priority segment.

Convergence India Expo, held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, brings together stakeholders from government, industry, and startups, with a focus on emerging technologies and digital infrastructure. The next edition is scheduled for March 23-25, 2027.
