In a move that could redefine how India experiences personal computing, Jio Platforms—the digital services arm of Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries—has launched JioPC, a cloud-based virtual desktop service that transforms an ordinary television into a functioning personal computer.

A Desktop Experience Through Your TV

JioPC enables users to access a complete PC interface right from their television sets using the Jio set-top box. The service, currently in a limited rollout phase, is available only by invitation as part of a free trial program. Jio aims to offer a seamless computing experience without the cost or bulk of traditional PC hardware. To use the service, users simply need to plug in a USB or Bluetooth-enabled keyboard and mouse to the set-top box. Once set up, the interface supports basic computing tasks such as web browsing, word processing, and even e-learning applications. However, users should note that external devices like printers or webcams are not supported at this time.

Affordable Access to Computing

JioPC is designed to address the gap in PC penetration across Indian households by offering a low-cost alternative to full-fledged desktop or laptop systems. The service is priced at Rs 5,499 if purchased independently, but it can also be bundled with Jio's broadband plans for added value. According to information available on the company’s website, the cloud environment comes preloaded with open-source software such as LibreOffice for productivity tasks. While Microsoft Office isn’t included, it can still be accessed via web browser, ensuring compatibility with popular formats and workflows.

Getting Started with JioPC

Setting up JioPC is relatively simple. Users must first turn on their television and Jio set-top box, then navigate to the apps section to open the JioPC application. A keyboard and mouse combo—either wired or Bluetooth-enabled—must then be connected to the box. After that, users will need to create a JioPC account by entering personal details and following the on-screen prompts. The service promises to bring an intuitive, cloud-powered computing experience to the living room—particularly useful for households without access to traditional PCs.

JioPC Follows Launch of AX6000 WiFi 6 Router

This new offering arrives shortly after Jio’s AX6000 WiFi 6 Universal Router hit the market in June. The dual-band router supports speeds of up to 6000 Mbps and leverages technologies such as OFDMA and MU-MIMO for reliable high-speed internet across multiple devices—even during heavy usage periods. The router also features Jio’s proprietary True AI Mesh system, designed to eliminate dead zones by intelligently managing connections. Supporting both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands, the AX6000 can cover up to 2,000 square feet and is equipped with WPA3 encryption for enhanced online security.

JioPC is yet another example of Reliance Jio’s aggressive push to democratise access to digital tools and services in India. As the line between TVs and computers continues to blur, Jio is making sure the next wave of computing could begin in your living room.
