Reliance Jio is drawing up plans for a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network that could cost nearly $15 billion and significantly expand its connectivity footprint beyond terrestrial networks.

The project could become one of the largest investments ever made by an Indian telecom company in the space sector.

The proposed project marks a major step in Jio’s long-term strategy to build digital infrastructure that reaches areas where traditional telecom networks remain difficult or expensive to deploy.

A Massive Satellite Network in the Making

According to industry reports, Jio is evaluating plans to launch a constellation of roughly 1,600 to 1,650 satellites in low-Earth orbit over the next few years.

The network would operate at an altitude of around 650 kilometres and is expected to support broadband internet as well as emerging direct-to-device services.

If executed as planned, the project would place Jio among a select group of companies globally building large-scale satellite communications infrastructure.

The move comes at a time when satellite-based internet services are attracting growing interest from telecom operators, technology firms and governments seeking wider digital coverage.
