India’s private space sector has reached a defining moment as Hyderabad-based startup Skyroot Aerospace officially became the country’s first spacetech unicorn. The milestone follows a fresh $60 million funding round co-led by Sherpalo Ventures and Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC. The latest investment has pushed Skyroot Aerospace’s valuation to $1.1 billion, more than doubling its 2023 valuation of $519 million. The round also saw participation from BlackRock, Arkam Ventures, Playbook Partners, and the Shanghvi Family Office.

The company said the new capital will be used to scale manufacturing capabilities, increase the launch frequency of its Vikram rocket series, and fast-track development of Vikram-2, a heavier one-ton-class launch vehicle aimed at larger payload missions. The development comes at a crucial time for the company, with the maiden orbital launch of Vikram-1 expected in the coming weeks. The mission is being closely watched as it could become India’s first privately developed orbital rocket launch.

Skyroot Aerospace had earlier made headlines in 2022 after successfully launching Vikram-S, India’s first privately built sub-orbital rocket. The achievement marked an early signal of the growing role private companies could play in the country’s space ambitions.

Industry observers view Skyroot’s unicorn status as a major milestone for India’s rapidly expanding private space ecosystem. The sector has seen significant momentum since the Indian government opened up the space industry to private participation in 2020, encouraging startups to build launch systems, satellite technologies, and commercial space infrastructure.

The rise of companies like Skyroot Aerospace also reflects increasing investor confidence in India’s spacetech sector, which is gradually positioning itself as a competitive player in the global commercial space economy.
