Bharti Airtel has become the first Indian telecom operator to introduce new prepaid recharge plans offering voice calls and SMS without bundled mobile data, following a directive from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The three plans, priced at ₹185, ₹203 and ₹206, offer unlimited local, STD and roaming calls, along with SMS benefits and free HelloTunes. Airtel lists the plans on its website, giving customers an alternative to conventional recharges that combine calling, messaging, and internet data.

Airtel Voice-Only Plans: Prices and Validity

Airtel’s new voice-only recharge plans offer three validity options, according to the company’s website.

  • ₹185 plan: Valid for 28 days.
  • ₹203 plan: Valid for 30 days.
  • ₹206 plan: Valid for one calendar month.

All three plans offer unlimited local, STD and roaming calls, with no bundled mobile data. They also include free HelloTunes.

The options let customers who mainly use their phones for calls and text messages recharge without paying for a data allowance they may not need.

TRAI Mandate Drives New Prepaid Tariffs

The launch follows TRAI’s September advisory, which demanded that telecom operators introduce special tariff vouchers (STVs) exclusively for voice calls & SMS at appropriately reduced tariffs.

Under the Telecom Consumers Protection (Thirteenth Amendment) Regulations, 2026, operators were advised to offer these dedicated vouchers alongside existing recharge options that bundle voice calls, SMS and data.

The regulations cover vouchers valid for 30 days or less. TRAI said operators must offer special tariff vouchers with an appropriate tariff reduction when plans cover only voice and SMS services.

Airtel’s latest offerings bring its prepaid portfolio in line with the regulator’s direction, ahead of the compliance deadline.

What the New Plans Mean for Airtel Customers

The voice-only options offer an alternative for subscribers who rely mainly on calling and messaging rather than mobile internet. They also give customers a choice between 28-day, 30-day and calendar-month validity.

Airtel’s rollout focuses on how other Indian telecom operators respond to TRAI’s mandate. The key question is whether dedicated voice-and-SMS tariffs will give customers more choice and make recharge costs better match their actual usage.
